Position: Construction foreman
Years in the landscaping industry: 7
How did you find your job at Outback? He was working in the concrete industry when a friend who worked at Outback encouraged him to apply
Family: wife, Monica; daughter Briceyda, 5; son Taeo, 2
Pets: Kilo the goldendoodle
Hobbies: Swimming; soccer; riding his four wheeler; spending time with his family and his six siblings who also live in the area.
A Typical Day for Jose
As construction foreman, Jose supervises a four-man crew who tackle everything from installing irrigation systems to constructing paver patios to building fire pits.
Much of his work is on big apartment complexes, but you could find him anywhere.
“I like what I do,” he says. “My job is to make sure everything is going good. I’ll put one guy doing one thing and another guy doing something else and make sure we’re all working together to get everything done right.”
When he says “we’re all working together,” he means it.
Technically, he’s in charge. But he sees himself as one of the guys.
“I don’t just supervise,” he says. “Whatever they do, I do. I’m holding a shovel, too.”
You might see him maneuvering a skid loader or working a mini excavator. The “mini x” for short.
Before they pack up for the day, Jose scans an eagle eye over everything.
Are the sidewalks clean? The tool trailer loaded and secure? Plants looking healthy?
Check, check, check.
“I work with good people,” he says. “They all know what they’re doing. They’re hard workers.”
There’s tangible satisfaction in his work, and he likes that.
“Yesterday we planted 150 to 200 plants at an apartment complex,” he says. “Roses, shrubs, grasses, hostas. Now that it’s done, it looks really nice.”
But there’s not much time to appreciate the view. There’s always another job waiting.
“We’ll be starting another new big apartment complex soon,” he says. “I’m excited to be part of it.”
